Your vocalist basically hears about 95% of what the finished product will be in their headphones while you are tracking but you are only printing the mic and preamp, not the legacy compressor.

A good use case would be tracking vocals using a Unison preamp (which are resource intensive) and using a legacy LA-2A in the channel insert for monitoring only. The included "Legacy" versions are still useful as they use significantly less processing resources than their updated counterparts.

They've since been upgraded - plus you get the suite of each which includes 3 different flavors of each. Yes - the included plugins are basically the mk1 versions. Studer A800 - Designed to work on each individual track drop it in on each channel to give the overall track the glue of tape works great with the Ampex on the master.Ampex ATR-102 - Great tape sim for the stereo bus highly tweakable and I find it makes tracks sound "finished".UA 1176 Limiter - This is essential for the UA platform comes with 3 versions - all of them useful.Teletronix LA-2A - This is essential for the UA platform perfect for vocals and acoustic guitar one of their best (although there are tons of iterations out there cheaper).Pultec Passive EQ - This is essential for the UA platform very versatile and one of their best.Maag EQ 4 - I like for vocals and synths.Dangerous BAX EQ - I use it on the stereo bus from time to time.AKG BX 20 Spring Reverb - Wonderfully murky spring reverb can get dark and spooky and the stereo image is immersive.SSL 4000 G Bus Comp - There's is good but there's a lot of good emulations out there I think most consider UA's version among the top 3 I use it quite a bit.SSL 4000 E - Great all around channel strip for a more modern sound I use it a lot on electronic sources (synths, drum machines, etc.).Neve 1073 - I think most view this as essential. Here's a list of what I have (outside of the Analog Classics collection that comes with the unit): That being said, you can get a lot of mileage out of the 610-B that comes with the package. My recommendatoin would be to wait for a sale and snap up some Unison channel strips as well as some of the essentials (Neve, Pultec, LA-2, Fairchild, 1176, API, SSL, not necessarily in that order). The UA forum has a ton of nerds/opinions on this as well. I'm not a recording engineer or expert so take my comments from the perspective of an enthusiast/hobbyist.
#Best universal audio plugins upgrade
I have a low powered mac mini so the Apollo Twin was the perfect setup for me - great preamps, great conversion, I can now run great plugs, and don't have to upgrade to a $$$$ computer. There is a database of the sales and prices on the UA forum that you could reference - the big sale is usually around Black Friday with another one around June - you can choose to wait or not - but the interim sales aren't bad and are generally coupon heavy. Take advantage! I can generally time purchases so I don't ever pay over $99 for a plugin but there have been times where I caved, for sure. They will issue $25 and $50 coupons from time to time. Therefore, proceed at your own risk.īefore you buy anything, you need to know that UA has a new sale every month.
